September...a wonderful month of change
This month, we get to take a much needed break from the hot summer months and enjoy cooler days as Fall draws near, enjoy the calm after the busy tourism season, and watch as artists retire to their studios and begin working longer hours to make more amazing artwork...and then wait in excited anticipation for theses unveilings in the coming months. We also look forward to our annual Black Hills Pow Wowand all the old and new friends this early October event welcomes to the area!

Lakota Language Books & CDsLakota Language Books & CDs

The language of the Lakota people has been passed down for thousands of years by way of oral tradition through the prayers, stories, and songs told by the generations before. It's a special language that not only gave people the ability to express themselves in spoken word, but it also preserved the culture, history, philosophy, and beliefs of the people.

Today, there is renewed interest in the importance of learning this amazing language and every year we discover more wonderful resources to introduce new speakers to the language or those that help advanced speakers flourish!

Smashing Chokecherries the Old Time waySmashing Chokecherries

A few weeks ago, Michael gave us a demonstration on how to smash chokecherries the old time way.

He gave us a great appreciation for this time honored tradition - how labor intensive this was, what people may have done to pass the time, and also shared a few Lakota terms for the different tools and techniques used in the process.

Black Hills Pow WowBlack Hills Pow Wow
The 26th Annual Black Hills Powwow is slated for October 5-7, 2012, at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The theme for this year's Black Hills Powwow is "Strengthening Our Communities."

Everyone is welcome to enjoy the beauty of Great Plains indigenous song and dance. There will also be a fine arts show, style show, He Sapa Win scholarship pageant, wellness symposium for youth, and tournaments for hand games, softball, golf, and archery.

pow wow music & dancePow Wow Music & Dance
The sights and sounds of the Pow Wow Trail are an exciting synthesis of old and new Native American music and dance - energetic drum rhythms and syncopated lyrics fill the space while dancers dressed in their finest regalia give breathtaking performances.

We pride ourselves on our collection of Pow Wow music and movies that preserve these sights and sounds even after the event is over!
