Here at the store we are constantly changing, we receive new inventory and have to change displays. We learn about new ways and change our old ways so change is constant and needed if you are going to survive the day-to-day of retail.
We are grateful to all the folks who stopped by and visited during the Black Hills Stock Show and we are looking forward to our next batch of visitors from all over. The Native American Gallery is re-arranging in anticipation of the gallery changes but also wants to remind everyone that Love is in the Air! This painted image by Lakota artist Evans Flammond, Sr. depicts a touching scene from an encampment. There's a lot to be said for having a mate for life.
Our bookstore has been watching the latest released movies from Indian country and giving their reviews. Anita says "There's always your tried and true like Imprint or ThunderHeart but some of the newer movies are grittier and have more substance about day-to-day life of the American Indian." One recent release that Anita watched is Empire of Dirt, her review, "Empire of Dirt is a movie from Canada, but it could be any reservation in the U.S. Very believable and well acted. It shows how strong first nations women are and who says you can never go back home." Anita gives it 3 1/2 stars.

Pam Hendricksen is a Rapid City, SD artist who creates paper mache crows adorned with medicine bags, feathers, beads and other findings. Some see crows as harbingers of death, but contrary to that impression, crows are actually considered good luck by many Native American tribes. In Native American folklore, the intelligence of crows is usually portrayed as their most important feature.
Pam also creates exquisite, hand-made note cards using different kinds of paper, feathers and botanical adornments. These cards are works of art that can be given or even framed.
As a side note: Pam was a part of the Prairie Edge operation (back in the day), she painted shields for the catalog collections and is a good friend to many of the folks who had worked with her.
