April 2013: Happy Earth Day Everyone!

"Ptehincala Sapa Wi" or "When Calves Are Red"

This month is known as Ptehincala Sapa Wi for the Lakota or When Calves Turn Red.

Happy Earth Day Everyone (April 22nd): A day we should all celebrate because without Earth, where would we be?  Our recent snow and rain storms are bringing with them some much needed moisture and we want to celebrate with everyone the Joys of Spring.
Spirit Buffalo Shield
Spirit Buffalo Shield

Our new feature this month is beadwork!  We are beginning to see more artists and crafts people and that always means new work.
Jim Little Wounded shares his newest shield with us called "Spirit Buffalo."  The shield is 2-cover and features a 3-D amulet.
For thousands of years, the Plains Indians lived well because of the Great American Bison. Some tribes paid homage to the buffalo as a Nation and thanked the buffalo for all it provided.

From the Fineart Gallery:
Foreign Currency
Foreign Currency
For the month of April, the Fine Art Gallery is featuring the work of local artist Bonnie Halsey-Dutton of Spearfish, South Dakota.  A former educator and professional artist, she holds a BFA from the University of Minnesota-Moorhead and an M.S.C.I. from Black Hills State University.

Bonnie's work has been featured in art galleries in both the States and in Europe.
For hundreds of years, Italian glass beads have been used as trade items and as actual currency.  Traders used these beads to trade with the Indian tribes of North America.

In the piece titled, "Foreign Currency" she uses water color on clay board.  She paints interwoven hanks of beads in intricate and exquisite detail.

The Dakota Prisoner of War Letters

Book & Music Store:

Recently, the Book and Music store received the newly published book, The Dakota Prisoner of War Letters by Clifford Canku and Michael Simon from the Minnesota Historical Society Press.

"Fifty extraordinary letters written by Dakota men imprisoned after the Dakota - U.S. War of 1862 give direct witness to a harsh and painful history shared by Minnesotans today."

"These haunting documents present a history that has long been unrecognized in this country, written in the words of the Dakota people who lived it."

Standing Horse

Our newest cd is by the group "Standing Horse."  They recorded this album live at the 50th Annual Traditional Mdewakanton Wacipi, July of 2012, they said it was hot!

This group has been together for many years and attribute their style to the teachings of their elders.
