February 2013 Newsletter: It's cold and snowy!
Istawicayazan Wi - When Eyes Hurt (Snow Blindness)

This time of year we are transitioning from the Lakota month of Cannapopa Wi - "Popping Trees" to the month of Istawicayazan Wi - "When Eyes Hurt" (Snow Blindness).

The last snowstorm we experienced certainly did "hurt the eyes."  With its bright white snow flurries and hurricane force winds, it certainly matched the description on the calendar.  Through it all, we stayed safe and warm in our homes which gave us time to reflect on the next few weeks as we move towards spring, a time of renewal.

Blue Ribbon Shirt
Ribbon Shirts

After the reservation period began in 1890, materials for clothing such as animal skins, porcupine quills and beads were almost non-existent for years.  As a result, people began to use ribbon as added decoration for clothing.  Thus, the Ribbon Shirt was born.

In keeping with the tradition of this contemporary style, Helen Ketukla, (Nakota First Nation Hohe) makes an excellent style of shirt. Offered in a variety of colors, the shirts feature ribbons representing the four directions:  black, red, white, and yellow.  They make a great gift and can be worn for any occasion.

 Fine Art Spotlights:

We are extending the Mel Gerhold showcase at the Prairie Edge Fine Art Gallery for a limited time.  Originally from Maryland, Mr. Gerhold moved to Buffalo, Wyoming in the 1970's "to be closer to the focus of his work." His primary medium is oil on canvas featuring cowboy and ranch life.  His work has appeared in Art of the West, Western Horseman, Wild West and many more publications.

The show will run through the end of February 2013.

An Extra Note About Botanicals:
During the past few years we have been experiencing a drought in the Midwest.  As a result, the botanicals (especially sage) have not been as full or as long as they have been in the past due to the lack of rain.  So we ask for your understanding.

However, we have been able to bring back some much needed botanicals in limited supply such as gum weed, the tea infused from the flower heads and leaves was once used as a herbal remedy for coughs and colds, as well as stomach aches. The tea was also applied topically for skin ailments.  Also, we were able to procure some red willow (Can'sa'sa) in limited supply.  It's a botanical that is sometimes mixed with bearberry or a little osha root and smoked in pipes.
