Happy New year Everyone!

Greetings from Prairie Edge and Sioux Trading Post:

Happy New Year!

We recently had a winter storm move into our area bringing in snow and very cold temperatures.  This time of year according to the Lakota calender, is "Cannapopa Wi" or "Moon When the Trees Crack From The Cold" which is an apt description.

Thirteen Moons on Turtle's Back

The Native cultures of North America have names for each and every season and cycle of the year. Since this is the start of a new year, the book, "Thirteen Moons on Turtles Back: A Native American Year of Moons" by Joseph Bruchac and Jonathan London is especially interesting.

Written for children, it is a colorful and well written guide to the different tribal culture's names for the different seasons of the year.

New Contemporary Music :

We are also featuring the debut album of the alternative rock duo
"Scatter Their Own" titled Catch a Fire.

The duo features Scott Clifford and Juliana Brown Eyes who are members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The album features four tracks of alternative rock songs, they are: Running, Catch a Fire, Taste the Time and Earth & Sky.

These Tracks are only the beginning of a promising career for the duo.

Fine Art Spotlights:

Just in time for the 2013 Black Hills Stock Show, western artist Mel Gerhold is showcasing his art at the Prairie Edge Fine Art Gallery.  Originally from Maryland, Mr. Gerhold moved to Buffalo,
Wyoming in the 1970's "to be closer to the focus of his work."  His primary medium is oil on canvas featuring cowboy and ranch life.  His work has appeared in Art of the West, Western Horseman, Wild West and many more publications.

The show will run from January 15, 2013 through February 24, 2013.

Native American Gallery:

During the cold months of winter a lot of folks will begin to repair or make new pieces for their regalia, we have some new moccasins in and this
might help with some of your needs.

It has been our experience that folks will make these beautiful regalia outfits and then buy the moccasins

There are some really great choices!
